4.0. KDE Environment

The UNIX environment in Richard's lab is primarily built around Linux. The chosen graphical desktop is KDE. Linux was chosen for its advanced development features, plethora of supported software, stability, and low cost. KDE was chosen for its user friendliness and advanced functional design.

If you are coming to Linux and KDE's graphical environment from Windows, Apple, or even another UNIX-based environment like Solaris, you are, not surprisingly, going to find that some things are different.

The purpose of this section of the document is to introduce you to a few of the most useful features of the KDE environment and the software available within this environment so that you can become comfortable working within this environment in the shortest amount of time possible.

4.1. The Taskbar
